Trends in Japanese patent & trademark applications – JPO Annual Report 2020

Trends in numbers of Japanese patent & trademark applications – Annual Report 2020 released by JPO:

  1. Japanese domestic patent applications;
  2. PCT international applications;
  3. Japanese domestic trademark applications; and
  4. Madrid Protocol international applciations.

1) Trends in numbers of Japanese patent applications and PCT applications

In 2019, 307,969 patent applications were filed in Japan in total, and among that, 241,001 were domestic patent applications and 66,968 were PCT international applications. The number of Japanese patent applications excluding PCT international applications was broadly flat from the year of 2015 but it slightly decreased in 2019.

 

Meanwhile, the number of PCT international applications filed before the Japan Patent Office as the WIPO receiving office is consistently on the rise, and in 2019, 51,652 PCT applications were filed, which was again the record-high. 

 

2) Trends in numbers of Japanese trademark applications and international trademark applications

In 2019, 190,773 trademark applications were filed in Japan in total, and among that, 171,323 were domestic trademark applications and 19,450 were international applications under Madrid Protocol. The number of Japanese trademark applications excluding international applications is consistently increasing.

 

Meanwhile, the number of international applications filed before the Japan Patent Office as the office of origin under the Madrid Protocol is consistently on the rise, and in 2019, 3,139 applications were filed.
