Top 20 Japanese Patent Firms of 2019 | PCT National Phase Entries into Japan
We are pleased to release the 2019 ranking of the Top 20 Patent Firms in Japan. This ranking is based on the number of PCT Japanese national phase applications published between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.
Since most of our clients (over 90%) are from abroad, we made up the list for our own interest. However, we hope the list will be of some help to you when considering patent law firms in Japan. It is our understanding that the applications were filed mostly by overseas applicants, but the numbers should contain some PCT applications filed by domestic (Japanese) applicants before the Japan Patent Office.

Trends in Japanese Patent Applications:
In 2018, 313,567 patent applications were filed in Japan. The number of Japanese patent applications is broadly flat from the year of 2015.
Trends in PCT Japanese National Phase Applications:
Meanwhile, the number of PCT international applications filed before the JPO is consistently on the rise, and in 2018, the JPO received 48,630 PCT applications as the WIPO Receiving Office, which is a record high.
